Yes, it’s only preseason but the Celtics have started out on the right foot. Sure, the Toronto Raptors aren’t exactly the class of the NBA, but there are plenty of things to be happy about in Sunday’s one point victory from the Celtics point of view. Some of the positives were actually first noticed by the fans that had the pleasure of attending the Celtics’ open practice on Friday night. The most obvious changed between this year’s roster and the team from last season is the influx of youth. Even before Jeff Green was diagnosed with a season-ending heart condition the Celtics roster has seen turnover to the point where there are just four players left from the 2008 championship roster. That’s right, the only players left from three years ago are the “Big 4,” Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo. These are the guys that Danny Ainge decided to build around, and they are the guys that he is sticking with for this upcoming season. We’ve heard for two years that this core was going at it “for the last time” or that it was “one more run”but they keep coming back as preseason contenders. Maybe this is the supporting cast that will bring the Celtics back to the NBA Finals. This is probably the first time in two years that I can safely say I’ve liked allof Ainge’s offseason moves. From drafting two gifted athletes from Purdue in JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore, to signing proven veteran free agents Keyon Dooling and Chris Wilcox, Ainge has not only retooled for the future but he has given the Celtics another chance to win right now. Not only that, but he has done it efficiently as the Celtics do not have any salary cap space to take advantage of larger contract offers. It was apparent at the open practice that the bench was definitely going to be more athletic than in years past as Moore and second-year guard Avery Bradley were battling each other as they began the fight for the 3rd point guard spot behind Rondo and Dooling.Bradley ended up winning the battle that night but overall Moore was the player that caught my eye. Between those previously mentioned, old friend Marquis Daniels and newly acquired Brandon Bass, the Celtics are yet again forming a potentially formidable bench which will be essential to keeping the starters fresh throughout the odd schedule that comes with this shortened season. As this team takes the steps towards forming the chemistry that everyone knows is so important, it will take a lot of listening from these new guys. They need to really take heed of the things that the coaches and the Big 4 are saying in order for this to work. From what we’ve see so far everyone seems to be on board and the familiar faces do not seem to have missed a step. There is still a lot to be seen about this team but I am very encouraged by their initial steps. The first game against Toronto was sloppy and while the starters did their job, head coach Doc Rivers had to make a decision on whether to ride his bench after they blew a double-digit lead and there was speculation that he would have to go back to the starters.
But Doc knew that this was just a preseason game and he wanted to see what these young kids were made of. It was not pretty. It was not graceful. But it was a win. The kids pulled it out as Allen and Garnett coached during time-outs. If the line-up on the floor at the end of that game was the line-up the Celtics were going to roll out this season there really wouldn’t be a whole lot to be excited for. We might even be yearning for the days of Gerald Green. But to think of that line-up as the possible future of the franchise? Now that’s something to look forward to.
