So we heard a little while ago that the top brass at the Chinese Basketball Association decided they weren’t going to include an escape clause for players to take advantage of if/when the NBPA and owners were able to work out a deal.
Their message was simple: You either play here or not!
Well, Wilson Chandler heard the message and decided to take himself and signature Ponys to the People’s Republic of China and play for the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions. Despite the CBA’s threats to hold him hostage all year long, the 6ft 8in athletic forward has decided to forgo his NBA career for at least one year and play for a contract that’s rumoured to be valued anywhere between $1.7- $3.1 million.
I wonder how much of a poker player Chandler is because that was a pretty gutsy move as I see it. Talk about all in.
Clearly, we’ d have to lose out an entire NBA season for this deal to work out for Chandler and that’s the last thing fans want to see. Chandler said, “Maybe I’ll lose out but I think it can be a great experience. I haven’t been in any (labor negotiation) meetings. I can’t call it. I’m just taking a risk, at the end of the day.”
It certainly is a risk and I hope it works out for you Wilson, I really do.
Well sorta. Don’t get me wrong, I wish him all the best but I’m really not interested in losing an entire NBA season.
The other thing that makes Wilson’s decision so intriguing is that it comes during the same week the players association and owners are set to meet again. So is this a question of him wanting to play or has he lost faith that the two sides can work this thing out? How many others share his thoughts?
And more importantly, how many more will cash in their chips and fold for a chance to play the game they love?
